Sold by Patricia McCormick is a book about an Indian named Lakshmi who is sold into prostitution. Lakshmi is a thirteen year old girl who lives with her family in a small village in Nepal.She is desperately poor and needs to help her family earn money. One day she stumbles upon a job opportunity  as a maid. Not realizing the terrible danger she is about to face, she accepts the job and walks with the kind stranger to the city.She arrives at a brothel that contains cruelty and cunning. Mumtaz who rules the the brothel tells Lakshmi she is trapped there until she can pay off her debt. Mumtaz cheats Lakshmi of her earnings so that she can never leave!  The main question is: will she risk everything for a chance to reclaim her life.
